Diane Martin says she’s enjoying cooking, cleaning and eating healthy

Diane Martin says she’s enjoying participating in the “community kitchen,” a program run by the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion’s (BACI) outreach department, because it caters to her interest in food preparation.

In fact, Diane says she likes the program so much she wouldn’t change anything about it. Cooking, she says, is something she likes doing. Since joining the program, which follows recommendations outlined in the Canada Food Guide, Diane says she has also been making healthier food choices.

Some of the healthy ingredients the program uses include yogurt, fruits, vegetables and granola. Sandwiches, pizzas, salads — even perogies — are among favourite foods prepared by the group. Fresh veggies are added to canned soup for a healthier option.

Diane says some of the healthy food options she’s enjoying most include a variety of salads, fruit and yogurt.

“I’m enjoying (the program) because I like to cook, I like to eat and (the food is) healthy,” she says, adding she has no particular favourite thing to cook.

“Whatever we make, I just eat it,” she chuckles. “I like the food and I like the people that make it.”

Even the cleanup at the end of the program is fun, says Diane.

“I like doing that, too,” she says. “I like doing the dishes, wiping tables and putting things away.”

The program sees a group of about 10 people who meet on Mondays and Wednesdays to learn the basics of cooking in an interactive environment.

During programming the group will decide on a recipe to make, go through the steps to prepare the food and then serve the meal, which everyone eats together. There is always enough made so everyone has a meal to take home.
