Three-year accreditation ‘fully expected’ after surveyors’ visit

Effort ‘shows that people care about quality services and the reputation’ of BACI
Wednesday May 25, 2011 — Ryan Rogers

Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI ) executive director Tanya Sather says she “fully expects” another three-year accreditation from Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) surveyors.

After staff and stakeholders helped review policies and procedures, update files and were openly available to provide surveyors whatever they needed, BACI received only two recommendations on 970 standards during its accreditation.

“I think people did a fantastic job,” says Tanya. “(Executive director) Richard (Faucher) and I were very proud of the work people put in, and it made a difference and shows people care about quality services and the reputation and performance of the agency.

“We want them to celebrate and they’re a huge reason why we were able to achieve such a good survey,” says Tanya. “There’s a lot of work ahead of time and there’s a buzz leading up to it, and when it goes well, there’s a sense of relief and celebration that the work paid off.”

The surveyors made two recommendations that Tanya says BACI will be able to address and remedy quickly.

The first recommendation was to inform the people they support of their rights more often.

“All our stakeholders have rights within our services, and we need to make sure when they come into our service that they’re aware of those rights, so they can access them if they need to,” says Tanya.

Tanya says people’s rights are always provided up front, but should be shared on a more regular basis.

“That was great feedback for us, and something we feel we can remedy right away,” she says.

The second recommendation was on performance appraisals, and ensuring they’re performed on a regular basis with all staff.

“Some areas we’ve fallen a little short, but this recommendation is helpful, and we’ll focus to get that done,” she says.
