Adult service worker proud to work for caring organization

Friendly, compassionate service demonstrated from the top down

Adult service worker Salvador Macaranas says he’s proud to work for the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI) because it’s a caring and principled organization.

He says the organization proves its values from the top down, adding that its executive directors are approachable and “really demonstrate dedication to BACI’s principles.”

He says he’s moved by how the executive directors have authentic caring friendships with the people they support.

“One of the residents here has been out with (executive director) Tanya Sather. They have a friendship where they go out together once in a while for lunch,” says Salvador.

He says he much prefers this to other organizations where company leadership may be strict and impersonal.

Salvador says the work environment is good for clients and co-workers alike. “It’s a good organization, and they really take care of the staff, too.”

BACI invested in a mechanical lift earlier in the year to assist adult service workers in helping the people they support access different facilities.

Salvador says the “efficient ceiling lift” eliminates the physical exertion adult service workers experienced. “It’s a really big change,” he says.

Salvador was a nurse in the Philippines before moving to Canada in 1997. His role allows him to work in his field, so he can practise what he’s learned from his nursing background.

He works in a rotation that supports five people in the same residence, and operates in a medical capacity by servicing oxygen, stomach tubes and tracheal tubes.

He adds he’s also pleased to work with a strong team at his residence.

“After 10 years I’m still here because we have a good team,” says Salvador. “We just do our job and we help each other.”
