Flexibility and dedication in planning help individual gain independence

Individuals earn confidence and pride in achieving their goals

Supervisor of day services for the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI) Lana Beblow says the association’s commitment to person-centred planning is helping the individuals they support achieve goals that are giving them confidence and pride.

The annual planning sessions where people accessing services share their goals for the year help establish a plan of action, but person-centred planning also requires flexibility to adapt and implement new goals and dreams as they arise.
Lana says the flexibility is invaluable.

In one instance, she says one individual told her he wanted to ride the public transit by himself, and they looked to incorporate that goal right away.

“A young man turned to me and said he wanted to take the SkyTrain by himself, and you can’t defer that to next year,” she says. “We’re here to respond to what they’re telling us, and it’s completely flexible.”

They immediately began a course of action to support him in his goals. His first ride was only to one stop, but it was a big step.

“There had been some barriers, and he overcame them, and he realized this was very important to him and it was after he did it, he looked at me and said, ‘I can take the SkyTrain by myself.’ He was so proud,” says Lana.

Now that individual takes the SkyTrain and bus independently to the day program, and he’s looking to take more routes.

“I’m just so proud of him, I always knew he could do it,” says Lana.

“I’ve known him for a long time and he’s very capable. He did a lot of hard work to get to this point, and when I look at him now he has much more confidence, and he’s grown so much.”
