Each individual’s personality reflected through person-centred planning

Quality assurance indicators help plan for a higher quality of life

Manager of life sharing network Alisha Robb has practiced person-centred planning for more than a decade, and says the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI) strongly reflects those values, attitudes and approach to support people in leading their best life.

“I’ve always done (person-centred planning), but the Burnaby Association really strongly advocates for and follows that approach,” she says.

“It’s about people’s hopes, dreams and goals for now and the future, and how to get there and who supports them along the way,” says Alisha.

She says throughout the planning, a close eye is kept on the quality assurance indicators that BACI established to determine a good quality of life. Individuals’ relationships, communication, health and safety, community, personal growth, development and home life are considered when making important decisions for their goals.

“When we’re doing the planning we look to see what goals, hopes and dreams people might have in those areas, and look to set up goals that are measurable and achievable and create a plan of action,” says Alisha.

She says it’s interesting to see how much the plans reflect the personalities of the individuals they’re designed for.

“The cool thing, too, is it really reflects the person who the plan is being created for,” says Alisha, adding that each individual’s plan reflects his or her personality.

One individual really likes First Nations music, dance and culture for example, but at the same time she doesn’t like the large crowds where that type of music and culture is often practiced.

A First Nations musical therapist was discovered to come in and play music with this lady, helping her explore her interest in comfort.

“She’s having great success, and loving it,” says Alisha.

“That’s a good example of taking something she enjoys and making it fit to her,” she adds.

Alisha says the results speak for themselves.

“We get ongoing feedback from the people we support. We’re able to gauge satisfaction, and of course, the satisfaction surveys go out as well,” she says.

“Those tools really reflect each individual’s choice, inclusion and belonging.”
