Graduates celebrated at Fair Haven Children’s Centre’s summer picnic

Children, staff members and parents enjoy potluck and karate in the park

Children, staff members and guests of the Fair Haven Children’s Centre celebrated the graduation of five members on Aug. 5 during their annual potluck picnic in David Gray Park.

Supervisor Amber Keane says the daycare performs an annual send off for children going into kindergarten, where they receive a certificate from the centre to a round of applause from their parents, friends and staff members.

Fair Haven, an out-of-school care program with the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI), had a small graduating class this year, but Amber’s expecting another 15-20 graduates next summer.

Graduates weren’t the only children honoured as the centre’s guest karate teacher arrived to hand out certificates and medals for martial arts.

Fair Haven has invited the sensei to teach karate classes to the children since 2010.

“(The children) really look forward to it,” says Amber. “As soon as the karate teacher comes into the room, they get really excited.”

She says the parents are supportive and some of the children have gone on to more advanced karate lessons after they graduate.

The sensei provided a presentation and the children demonstrated the blocking techniques they’d been practicing.

There were about 50 people in attendance including two children from past classes who were invited, sharing in pizza, salads, fruit and veggie plates, drinks and a cake.

“Sometimes if we see (past attendees) around the neighbourhood, or know them from out-of-school care, they’ll come by and visit as well,” says Amber.

The parents found the picnic a nice opportunity to meet and speak together, without the regular “hustle and bustle” involved in dropping children off and picking them up at daycare, she adds.
