It’s the time of year to celebrate the change-makers in the Burnaby community.

The inaugural Inclusion Through Innovation awards will be presented during the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI) Ball on Nov. 3 and the opportunity to nominate someone is open until Oct. 14. Nominations can be submitted by visiting this link.

The awards celebrate the innovative strategies to advance the inclusion of people of all abilities in Burnaby by an individual and by an organization.

The awards will not only celebrate the good work being done, but hold it up as an inspiration and a model for others in the community. Everyone is encouraged to nominate individuals and organizations who are supporting the advancement of inclusion in innovative ways.

On Oct. 3 seven recipients of the Burnaby City Council’s 2011 Local Hero Awards were presented with certificates, including BACI advocate and educator Nellie Wong who has dedicated 20 years to the inclusion movement in the area.

BACI is also supporting the third annual Big Picture Award on Oct. 14 in association with posAbilities to recognize founder and executive director of the Vela Microboard Association Linda Perry, whose innovations are providing a service that’s “as close to individualized funding as it gets,” says BACI executive director Richard Faucher.

The Big Picture Awards recognize leaders and change-makers in the community living movement.

The Vela Microboard is a committed group of family and friends that create a small non-profit society to address the planning and support needs of a person who has a disability.

The committee members must be in a close, voluntary and committed relationship with the person for whom the board is created. Linda has overseen the development of hundreds of microboards.
