Families and children who love children’s music won’t want to miss Music on Mondays.

Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI) runs the program that’s led by music therapist Don Hardy.

Family support worker Sarah Baumbusch supervises the program, which she says is designed to enrich the children through music and create a networking opportunity for parents.

The program is for all families. Pizza and snacks are served at 6 p.m., and the interactive live music and fun runs from 6:15 until 7 p.m.

“It’s intended for families to be with their children and interact in the music,” says Sarah.

“Where do we do that nowadays, where we sing ‘The Ants Come Marching’ or ‘Bingo’? I don’t even know where kids still do that.”

Don plays a keyboard or brings a guitar, and the children participate with tambourines or percussion instruments.

Music on Mondays was started by Sarah’s sister Jennifer five years ago.

“My brother-in-law, who’s an amazing musician, was the first music leader,” says Sarah.

Some of the program’s founding families still attend.

“There’s a core group of four families, and if they don’t show up, I’m worried,” says Sarah.

When the music wraps up, the children play, and parent networking begins.

Parents will share information and resources between themselves for the last 30 minutes.

Families wishing to be notified of Music on Mondays dates can send their contact information to family.services(at)gobaci.com to be put on BACI’s weekly e-mail list.

Sarah says the Music on Mondays program is funded by the BC Gaming Grant, but donations to support the program are welcome. Donations can be sent to BACI, Family Gathering Place, 7716 Royal Oak Ave., Burnaby, BC J5J 4K4 and should specify “family support.”
