‘It’s a wonderful example of corporate social responsibility’

A small team of fundraisers from the finance department of the Pacific Blue Cross in Vancouver spent a year fundraising throughout their office to donate more than $2,000 to the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI).

“It’s a wonderful example of corporate social responsibility,” says BACI communications and resource development senior manager Carol Broomhall, who adds that it will make a “wonderful contribution” to the association’s programming.

Each year a small committee from Pacific Blue Cross’ finance department prioritizes an organization that supports the local community, like BACI, and raises money on their behalf throughout the year.

While considering different organizations to support, staff members discovered how BACI touches the lives of a couple of their colleagues’ families, including one whose daughter attends one of BACI’s day-care programs.

Finance department controller Lizanne Mailhot serves as the executive chair for the philanthropists, liaising communications on fundraising initiatives amongst the 750 Pacific Blue Cross employees.

Lizanne says many employees learned more about what BACI stands for and the people they support in the local community.

“When we were doing our fundraising, (employees) didn’t know much about the association,” she says. “I’m happy we educated a few people about (BACI), and they can continue to do the good work that they’re doing.”

The Pacific Blue Cross is one of B.C.’s  leading benefits providers, with health, dental, life, disability and travel coverage for approximately 1.5 million British Columbians through employee group plans and individual plans.

Lizanne says much of the team’s corporate social responsibility work aims to improve the health and welfare of the public, and sponsors organizations like the Canadian Mental Health Association.
